Miller-Valentine Group announces it has reached an important safety milestone: more than 731,000 work hours without incident (as of 2/28/15). In honor of this significant achievement, company officials hosted a special recognition event, providing its commercial construction field Associates with new safety boots.
“This achievement is a reflection of the hard work and level of commitment of our Associates who have driven our success for over fifty years,” noted Bill Krul, Chief Executive Officer. “At Miller-Valentine we cultivate a culture of safety throughout the organization; we make it a priority on every project.”
Bill Burke, Safety Director, leads the safety program for Miller-Valentine Group. Burke, a 21-year industry veteran, and certified OSHA outreach instructor, is frequently invited by industry leaders to speak about safety topics at educational events. “It all starts with management commitment,” said Burke. “Management has to challenge all Associates to apply, train, inspect and monitor safety practices in order to ensure safety on construction job sites.”
Miller-Valentine has been an Ohio Valley Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) member since the inception of the chapter in 1974. “Miller-Valentine has participated in ABC’s Nationally Recognized STEP program for over 10 years receiving highest recognition, the Diamond Level since 2012 and Platinum level since 2004,” said John Morris, President, Associated Builders and Contractors. “It is an honor and a privilege to recognize Miller-Valentine for their Star Level status in OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program, Mobile Workforce Demonstration for Construction, since 2007. Participation in VPP is a testament to Miller-Valentine Construction’s sustained excellence in all areas of their safety and health management system.”
Miller-Valentine leaders emphasize that safety is not just good for Associates, that a culture of safety is good for business. The company reports it has been able to secure projects because of its outstanding safety record. “When L’Oreal was choosing a construction management team for our recent plant expansion, we emphasized the need for a company that could deal with such a complex project. Safety was a big factor, along with the basic elements of meeting Scope, Schedule, and Cost,” said Ed Babka, Assistant Vice President – Engineering, L’Oreal USA, Florence manufacturing. “Miller-Valentine provided a consistent focus, not letting other challenges disrupt the need to keep the workers safe, and continually improve the safety programs and interactions throughout. The project was completed on time and budget.”
