This month, we are sharing one of our tips that will not only help you to be more “green,” but also save you money!

For each electric bill paid, a percentage is set aside for customer rebates. Consumers can receive these rebates by applying to their utility provider’s rebate programs. These programs were created to reduce the demand on the electrical generation infrastructure. Utility companies have been removing electric generation equipment from the market over the last several years due to its age and the expenses necessary to meet the EPA’s requirements. Utility companies are now asking that consumers reduced energy consumption by installing energy efficient windows, lights, heating and cooling equipment, insulation, etc. These energy saving methods not only conserve energy, they help reduce the customer’s electric bill. The rebates were implemented to help customers offset the initial cost of purchasing these energy saving devices. It is generally cheaper for the utility company to pay these rebates than to pay for the upgrade of the power plants.
There are many different types of utility rebates available in two general categories, standard and custom. Standard rebates, also called rapid rebates, are provided for the energy saving programs that the electric company offers. Custom rebates are provided for companies that have implemented their own energy saving programs. If the electric company provides custom rebates, they may require calculated proof of energy saving, and a rebate amount is offered based upon the calculated energy savings. For custom programs, the equipment typically must exceed the minimum requirements of the federally mandated efficiency standards. Energy efficient equipment available in this type of rebate includes lighting controls, thermal storage, outside air economizers, energy recovery ventilation, air compressors, and more.
Energy audits and rebates
An Energy Audit is used to help facility owners determine where they are wasting energy and likewise money, and how to become more energy efficient. Auditors use a variety of surveying techniques to compile an energy analysis of energy consuming equipment. At the end of an Energy Audit, energy-saving projects are suggested to reduce consumption and cost. With help from the rebate programs mentioned above, these projects can be put into place at a reduced cost.
A special program offered to businesses throughout the Dayton region is the Dayton Regional Green 3 (DRG3) in collaboration with DP&L. Through this program, a business interested in updating its facility to more energy efficient standards, can receive an energy audit at a reduced rate. Upon completing the audit, DP&L reimburses 50% of the cost of the audit, if an identified energy saving project isimplemented within 12 months of the audit. Energy audits are helpful to anyone attempting to save money on utilities.
What’s the catch?
As far as we know, there is no catch. The customer saves money on costs of energy saving equipment, electric bills, and helps the environment all at the same time. There are several rebate programs available in most cities throughout the US.
